IXL
This week we will be focusing on addition facts in math. In second grade it is the goal for the kiddos to master these facts (sums up to 20) and be able to immediately recall them. Memorization is a great way to learn these; however, during the school day there's no time for that. Below is a link to a website that has free flashcards you can print for practice at home.
For IXL this week any second grade strand that's addition would be a great idea.

Halloween Party
UPDATE
UPDATE
Our Halloween Party will be on Wednesday, October 31st. This Wednesday is actually NOT an early release. The party will be from 1:30-3:00. Please email me, send in a note or comment on this post by next Friday the 5th if you're able to help at the party or by simply sending in an item so I can give your info to those in charge of party planning :) Party set-up will begin at 1:00.
100's Chart
Here is a 100's chart that you can print to use at home for help with math if you'd like. The method that we use at school is to count up which means if the problem is 6+8, the child should start on the biggest number (8) and count up 6. During subtraction it's the same technique only they'll "hop" backwards. We also encourage using the patterns of a 100's chart and the fact that if you go up or down from a number it is + or - 10. Students may choose to use this shortcut. For example if the problem is 22 +12, they would begin on 22 and then instead of "hopping" 12 times they would go down one (+10) and then over 2 in order to make 12.
As we move forward in math over the course of this year and do two-digit subtraction and addition these techniques and familiarity of the 100's chart will be helpful.

IXL Usernames
Good morning! I wanted to let you know that I changed a few of the IXL usernames last night in order to make things easier when signing in as a class in the computer lab. From now on the last three numerical digits on the ends of every username are 274. There were about 4 kiddos whose number was 695 (I have no idea why) so those few got changed to 274. Please let me know if you have any questions or if you have problems logging in. We will be doing IXL in computers today for the first time so hopefully any problems that may arise can be fixed in computer class this afternoon. Thanks!
FYI- We will be dicussing as a primary staff the possibility of changing these log-ins to being more simple and similar to AR sign-ins (they won't allow them to be exactly the same.) I will let you know if this happens.

Picnic Lunch
Don't forget to bring a sack lunch tomorrow for the picnic after the Jog-a-Thon. A towel or blanket and a water bottle would also be a great idea!

Reading Homework
Reading homework begins tonight. The children will need to read each night, fill out the summary log, have a parent sign in, and return it the next day.
The books that are going home this first time may be a little easy to some. The students know that if they read this book and do well on the AR quiz they will be bumped up to a harder book. On the other hand, if they do poorly on the quiz then we will continue to work together to find a book that is at the appropriate level.
Please keep the sticky notes in the books so that we can re-use them. And you are always allowed to read ahead or read more if you'd like. :)
Let me know if you have any questions.

IXL
Hello there....thank you to everyone who came to Back to School Night. A couple things about IXL...every student that signs in at home and does IXL will receive a coupon and the student that does IXL for the most amount of time each week will earn two coupons. A parent suggested that I let you know what math skills we are working on in class that could be reinforced through IXL and I think that's a great idea. I will do my best to put the IXL standards that match what we've been doing in class on the blog each week. You can practice these or work on what you'd like...just make sure it's second or third grade :)
Let me know if you have any questions.
This week we've been reviewing the following concepts...
A.3-Counting Patterns up to 100
P.3- Count Money up to $1
Q.4-Match Clocks and Times

Pirate Day for second graders is coming! A note will go home in Friday Folders tomorrow, but make sure to come dressed like a pirate next Friday to celebrate International Talk Like a Pirate Day! There's no need to go out and buy a costume...just get creative! :)
Reading Homework
A lot of the kiddos have been asking about reading homework. It would usually begin next week (the week after we start doing homework) but I have decided to push it back another week. This will give us more time to get used to the routine of homework in second grade and also to talk about it at Back to School Night on the 11th.
So beginning on Monday, September 17th I will send home a book along with the homework packet. The book will need to be returned each day with the reading log filled out and signed. The paper pages of homework will still continue to be returned all at once on Friday.
Let me know if you have any questions.

Oops
In the note that went home Friday I made a mistake on the Back to School Night date (I forgot to change it from last year's date). It has been correct on every other paper and is correct on the September calendar on the website. It is Tuesday, September 11th at 6:00 :) Thanks! I hope you had a great three day weekend!
On another note, homework is going home for the first time today. It is all due on Friday. Please carefully read the orange note attached to the front. Let me know if you have any questions.
