Owl Pellets

Last Thursday we dissected sterilized owl pellets in class from barn owls.  The kids loved it!  There was definitely some apprehension before we started, but once they dug in they were hooked.  It was so great to see how excited they were when finding bones and identifying which animal they may have belonged to.

Our party at school on Thursday was tons of fun!  Thank you so much for all the help from parents that made it possible.  Here are some pictures of the party.

Pirate Day!

This Friday, September 16th, the 2nd graders at Caughlin Ranch are celebrating Talk Like a Pirate Day!  Please come to school dressed in any creative pirate garb you can find!  Please make sure that your outfit is still school appropriate and leave all swords and parrots at home.  :)  The pirate clothes will count towards our "spirit count" for 2nd grade on Friday.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Hot Air Balloon

Today, as a special treat, a hot air balloon came up to school in celebration of the Hot Air Balloon Races.  We got to go outside and watch it inflate and even got an up close look at the inside!

Last Week

This last week of school the students will not be getting book bags.  They will get homework on Monday, but it's only one assignment.  Please make sure to bring backpacks everyday this week as students begin to bring home their supplies.

Next Week

Please continue to bring backpacks next week to school.  Items may be coming home each day as we approach the very last day of school.  Monday morning we will be watching the 6th graders take on the teachers in a softball game.  Please make sure to dress in layers.  Have great weekend!  I can't believe we've reached our last week!

Field Day & Party

Tomorrow is Field Day and the 2nd grade end of the year party right afterwards.  Please make sure to bring a light jacket and to wear appropriate shoes and sunscreen.  Students are allowed to bring park appropriate toys to the park at their own risk for the party; however, no water guns will be allowed.

Up and Coming

Just a reminder that next week there is no school on Monday.  Biography projects are all due on Wednesday, which includes the Biography Information Sheet and the notecards.  Students will need to bring their "costumes" and props for their presentations on the day that they will be presenting.  Please see the previous posting for this schedule.  Friday is field day in the morning and our end of the year party from 11:15-1:30.  Please let me know if you are able to volunteer for either of us.

Animal Ark Highlights

Here are some highlights of our great Animal Ark field trip.
On the bus...

And we're off...

They were excellent listeners even though they could barely contain the excitement that Effie was right around the corner.

Here she is!!  She had a little bit of "bed head" since she was in between her winter and summer coats.  Our guide, June, was nice enough to call someone who went in and woke Effie up for us.  She ran up to the fence and then proceeded to prance back and forth the entire time we were there (Effie that is, not June).  The kids were so excited.

Watching Effie...

The falcon

Asking June some last questions and suggesting some possible names for their falcon.

We had such a wonderful time at the animal sanctuary.  The kids were wiped out, a few even managed to sleep the entire way back to school.
